Sep. 30 to Oct. 4: Geophysical surveying on historical mine tailings in Blötberget
Our field crew from Uppsala University is at the old Blötberget mine in central Sweden preparing for an extensive geophysical survey of the historical tailings (mining waste) at the site. The survey will take place in the week of September 30 to October 4 2024.
Despite being considered mining waste historical tailings can still contain Critical Raw Materials (CRM) and are thus attractive as a secondary resource since they are easy to retrieve straight from the ground surface. Utilizing such readily available resources is important for a more responsible mining future.
Conducted as part of an exploration geophysics field course for Master students at Uppsala University, the survey will include multi-component seismic methods, gravity and magnetic measurements as well as radio-magnetotellurics.
Additionally there will be sampling of the tailings for collaborative lab studies between several partners of the Center.
School visits during the survey will give younger students a chance to see geophysics in action and learn why these innovative methods are vital for securing the future Critical Raw Material supply in a responsible way.
